Short story writing can be difficult. My associate teacher gave me two resources that provide stellar examples of how writers build three dimensional characters and develop vivid settings that can be visualized by readers. These two resources are super beneficial to have on hand for when you are trying to introduce the idea of sustained action that is in twenty pages or less. Leading a discussion around what makes these stories stand out and what words are used to help motivate the reader to continue reading can help students warm up to the idea of short story writing. Having The Creativity Project a Story Collection, in your classroom library for students to read independently is extremely beneficial as short stories can be forgotten amongst novel length books. As well as having the Teaching Powerful Writing by Bob Sizoo on your own personal bookshelf is a good go to for a classroom read aloud or to brush up on short story instruction.
