While setting up this year’s classroom the teacher wanted to keep in mind areas of the classroom that were conducive to the whole group, small group, and independent learning. Creating space for all learning is beneficial and critical when it comes to student achievement (Guide, 2003). The environment that surrounds the children is significant as it acts as the third teacher (Capacity, 2012).  This classroom creates a space for all learning as there is flexible seating with the whole group student tables and a calming area independent reading area. As the teacher teaches language, literacy is intricately interwoven throughout the classroom as there is a classroom library that contains shelves of leveled books as well as multiple different kinds of text on the book stand. Allowing students written work and effective anchor charts to be posted on the classroom walls is very important in supporting literacy. Mirroring children’s work allows not only a sense of accomplishment but creates a print-rich environment (Guide, 2003).

The classroom is also fortunate to have a smartboard and iPads allowing students to become tech literate. Working with both the smartboard and iPads many assistive technologies can be incorporated into the classroom, which can be essential for some students but helpful for all. Including a kidney table is ideal when a teacher wants to pull aside small groups and have them work together with their guidance. This table is put to the side in a lower foot traffic area making it quieter and a safe space for children to learn. The large teacher desk in the corner is put there with the intention of creating a less teacher directed environment. A teacher desk that does not sit at the front of the room but rather tucked away can help free up space and also create a more inclusive environment. The teacher is acting more as a facilitator rather than a dictator. Having a cubby space and storage space for the children’s work that is only for their personal belongings gives students a sense of security and comfort as they have control over their own space. Overall having a print-rich classroom with mirrored work, flexible seating, and accommodating groupings provides a space of inclusion and equity.
