Graphic novels are such a wonderful thing to include in your classroom library. Two books- New Kid by Jerry Craft and American Born Chinese by Gene Luen Yang are great books to include. Starting a book study on these books has been an incredible journey so far filled with rich discussions around what are micro-aggressions, is this racism, in a middle school context. Providing students with these graphic novels to read is important but fostering conversations around these difficult topics can help students better empathize with the main characters and attach themselves quicker to the plot of the story.
Jerry Craft has been recently distinguished with the John Newbery Medal. Congratulations Jerry Craft look forward to the sequel!
